Lunging equipment

Lunging can be used in many ways to train your horse, whether for obedience, strength, or balance. It’s also a great way to exercise your horse without a rider. Lunging is often used to prepare young horses for their careers as riding horses. During lunging, a range of equipment can be used depending on the training goal.

Basic lunging equipment

To start lunging, you only need a few basics. A lunge line and a lunge whip are usually enough initially. Next, decide whether to use a head collar or bridle. A bridle allows you to provide more refined aids, and when lunging with a bridle, a lunge attachment is ideal. This attachment allows you to switch sides easily without tangling the lunge line.

Cavesson

Instead of a bridle or head collar, you can also use a cavesson for lunging. With three rings on the nose, a cavesson is perfect for working on your horse’s lateral flexion. Attaching the lunge line to the middle ring allows the horse to bend through its entire body, from nose to tail.

Lunging aids and training reins

QHP offers various lunging aids to elevate your lunging sessions. Lunging aids can help support your horse’s use of its back or encourage neck flexion. To attach training reins, you’ll often need a lunging girth. A lunging girth is also useful for introducing young horses to the feel of girth pressure.
