How to use a girth
A girth is used to secure the saddle on your horse’s back—but take care never secure too tightly! Follow these steps:
1. Place the saddle on your horse’s back just behind the withers.
2. Gently slide it backward until it stabilizes—this is the correct position.
Once the saddle is positioned correctly, fasten the girth by threading it under the horse’s belly and securing it on both sides, alternating tension to avoid tightening only one side. Regularly check that your horse can breathe comfortably and that the fit is correct, as weight and muscle development can affect your saddle fit over time. A well-fitted girth ensures comfort and safety during riding.
Types of QHP girths
Choose from a range of girths to meet your needs. First, determine the correct length based on two factors: your saddle type and your horse’s size. Jumping saddles use longer girths, also called all-purpose girths. Jumping girths may include a belly guard to protect the horse’s stomach during jumps with shoes.
Another type is the dressage girth, which is shorter due to the longer flaps on dressage saddles. Most dressage girths are anatomically shaped and can be lined with sheepskin. Designed for comfort and freedom of movement, these girths are essential for the precise and controlled movements required in dressage.
